In most vehicles the overdrive button is either on the gear shifter or on the stiring colum. If you dong want or need overdrive on then just press the button. Overdrive allowed is the NORMAL position ( if I'm on the highway and have to go down a long / steep hill , I like to cancel the overdrive with the switch on the end of the gear selector so the transmission stays in drive and gives some engine braking )

You mean OD off. That is overdrive off. If it stays on all the time, you need to have the trans computer checked for codes.
What does it mean when the overdrive light in a 2003 expedition stays on or blinks?
The transmission may be damaged. My wife and I had an Explorer and it did the exact same thing, and shortly after the transmission went out. Have it checked out at a reputable shop or dealer.
