Sir Walter Raleigh left behind an expedition of men on Roanoke Island, off the coast of Virginia on 17 August 1585 with the sole purpose of establishing a colony. When John White returned on 22 July 1587, they found the site deserted. White left the 150 colonists he had brought with him to reestablish the colony. On 18 August that year, White daughter Eleanore gave birth to the first English-American, Virginia Dare. White left later that year, leaving behind 115 colonist, including his granddaughter. He was unable to return for three years. There was no sign of the people he left behind, and he discovered the word "Croatoan," the name of a nearby island and tribe, carved into the post of the fort of the colony.
