Depending on the depth and thickness of the overgrown foliage, some other type of power tool would need to be used first. A weedeater (and a chainsaw if there are bushes) may help you get through the work faster. Make sure you have an easy way to dispose of the vegetation, so that you can work your way through it. I've even seen people take a full moving truck to the dump!
Commercial weedeater is the best bet if it is really overgrown. Either that or a weedeater with a blade, or a side shoot mower with the height all the way up.
