we breathe out a gas called carbon dioxide
Oxygen
Do you breathe metal? Oxygen is a gas, not metal.
There's a process called gas exchange which takes place in the lungs: put simply, both oxygen & carbon dioxide are transported around the body in the blood stream; when the blood reaches the lungs it does a trade - swapping waste CO2 (a by-product of the cellular respiration which is constantly going on in every cell in your body) for oxygen in the air you've just breathed in. So the air you breathe out contains that waste gas, plus the proportion of CO2 that was already in your last breath in.
Humans/animals take in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide during respiration. Plants do the opposite during photosynthesis.
The natural phenom that lets humans breathe is called air. Humans breathe through respiration of the lungs. Air is taken into the body in the form of oxygen and expelled in the form of carbon dioxide.
The colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that you breathe in is called oxygen, the chemical symbol of which is O2. Similarly, the gas that you breathe out is called carbon dioxide.
Plants breathe in a gas called carbon dioxide and then they breathe out the gas called oxygen which is what we breathe in! Also there is most likely a type of living thing which no human has ever discovered and so there may be milllions of kind of living things that may not breathe in oxygen - they might not even breathe in a gas!
