The chances of getting pregnant start to drop quite rapidly after 40 but if you are still having regular periods pregnancy is a possibility so you still need to use contraception. Something like the intra-uterine contraceptive device (the coil) work well for older women as then you will know when you stop menstruating. If you are under 50 two years without a period means you are past menopause. For over 50s you are considered safe if you have not menstruated for one year.
