Chimney, battle Team Magma/Aqua, and go back on the jagged path. It takes you to Lavaridge city. The gym leader has two Slugmas that are easy to beat and a Torkoal that knows Overheat. And by the way, the 5th gym leader is your dad. I know because I'm working on the 7th.

From the sounds of it, you may have used a Gameshark or Action Replay, which would probably explain what went wrong. You shouldn't have been able to even challenge the Elite Four without having beaten the Viridian City gym.
