i am not a mechanic, but have the same problem. i have a 97 altima, air works fine, then works intermittantly. the dealer says it is a weak clutch spring that does't allow the clutch in the compressor to reengage. $800 repair bill.
The a/c compresor was working backwards for 5 minutes
DISCONECT THE BATTERIE CABLE FOR 10 MINUTES ,AFTER YOU RECONNECT THE BATTERI YOU CAN CHARGE THE AC. COMPRESSOR
You have a cycling clutch compressor. Turn the AC on max, let the car for five minutes or so, go look at the compressor. You should see the clutch engaging and disengaging the compressor as the pressure builds and drops.
For a few years in the 1970s, they changed the length to 80 minutes, but it was changed back to 70 minutes again a few years later, as it is now. League games used to be 60 minutes, but are now 70 minutes.
When the compressor comes back on does it stay on?
There is no fixed rule, just suggestions from a few minutes to an hour.
Sounds like the a/c compressor is locking up and burning both the a/c clutch and the belt..........
Bleed off some of the refrigerant to get the system pressure down, then wait a while until any liquid refrigerant in the compressor has time to leak into the refrigerant loop. It may take a few minutes; since the compressor valves seal imperfectly, pressures will eventually equalize and it should be possible to start up the compressor again.
I'm open to other joke suggestions. :)
0.75 min = 45 sec
That depends? Is the compressor freezing? Or is the whole condensor freezing? Well any way if the compressor is freezing try adding more refrigerant or put a crank case heater band on it. If the whole condensor is freezing (assuming it is a heat pump) throw it into cool for 10 minutes to 20 minutes or until condenser is unfrozen then call a tech and ask them to come and repair it cause your defrost board or defrost thermostat is bad.
It's a cycling clutch compressor. It disengages to keep system pressure where it should be. When it reaches the high point, it disengages. Then it engages again when it reaches the predetermined low point.
