Satan was indeed an angel - "the anointed cherub", and "son of the morning", - but he got too proud, ("Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty"), and he wanted to be as God, - "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High", he said. Now He is a fallen angel or devil.
