It has been my experience that most backfiring problems are cause by intake vacuum leaks. You might want to check the torque on the intake manifold retaining bolts or it may be a worn intake manifold gasket. You might also want to inspect the vacuum hoses for cracks or loose connections. You might also check the timing. If the timing is off, it can also cause backfire and starting problems.

If your beretta has a v-6 odds are that your intake manifold gaskets are leaking these gaskets are plastic and must be replaced periodically your antifreeze is most likely leaking there and burning off immediately thus you'll see no leak.I recommend youy take the car to a shop for diagnosis...

Because a true 350 vortec I think relies on the vortec intake in order for the pressure to stay correct. I just remember i had my vortec box off of my truck one time I started it and It died just put the old vortec air intake back on and it should be fine. sounds like you have vacumn leaks around the intake manifold, this can be checked with a can of carb spray,
