Togo was colonized first by the Portuguese in the 15th century; however, the French took control of a wide swath of coastal West Africa in the mid-1800's, and eventually expanded inward. This area included the areas now known as Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Sénégal, and Togo, among others. Although briefly under German rule in the period of 1905-1914, the territory was split up and returned to French and British rule as a result of World War One.
