Removing odors from a rug, without washing or dry cleaning, is easily accomplished in a few different ways.

The most common, and most effective, way of removing rug odor is through the use of baking soda.

First, locate the area that has the odor. Once you have found the offending spot, sprinkle baking soda from a newly-opened box over the area. You will only need a small amount of the powder; covering it in a light dust should be enough.

For extremely strong odors such as pet urine or greasy foods, the baking soda should sit on the rug for at least three hours. A lighter odor should be removed within an hour.

When sufficient time has passed, use a hard-edged broom to remove most of the baking soda, then run a vacuum cleaner over the area. If the smell remains, you can repeat this process until it is fully gone.

If baking soda is unavailable, borax powder may be substituted and the process would be the same.

This method will work for all rug types; if you have a wool or shag rug, however, the removal of the baking soda residue might be difficult.

An alternative for those rug materials would be the use of dryer sheets. Simply place a dryer sheet, with a paper towel on top, under the area of the rug that has the strongest smell; the paper towel will prevent stains being created by the chemicals in the dryer sheet.

The dryer sheet should stay under the rug for at least a day, and can remain as long as needed for extremely strong odors.

Using a towel or dishrag, white vinegar, followed by lightly soapy water can be used to scrub down the areas that smell. This method is not very effective if the odor was caused by mildew or humidity, but can be very useful with other types of smells.

By using any of these methods, you can easily and quickly remove any rug odor and leave them smelling fresh and clean.

What type of fungicide do you buy for musty smells in furniture?

It should just be cleaned normally. You can add a cap full of pine sol to help. But, after it's cleaned to remove all of the musty smell, try to get an ozone generator and run it at least 24 hours in an enclosed area with the furniture. The ozone will penetrate all of the surface smell as well as the deep down smells. It will oxidize the bacteria that creates the smell. This works really well. The generators can be rented.

Remove a musty smell in the basement from carpet?

That musty smell could be coming from mold in the carpet and or it's padding, as basements tend to be damp. You could have the carpet cleaned professionally or clean it yourself with a good carpet cleaner. If this is unsuccessful it may be necessary to replace the carpet padding or both the carpet and it's padding.

The fine white powder on book pages is likely paper dust or debris from aging paper. It's not typically mold if there is no musty smell. You can gently clean it off with a soft brush or cloth. Once cleaned, the book should be safe for use as long as there are no signs of mold growth or water damage.
