My 1994 Golf had an alarm system in it so I'm assuming your car has one too. The alarm has a separate horn which will go off when the battery is reconnected. To turn it off, use the key and lock and unlock one of the front doors a few times. The alarm should turn off at this point. This will happen every time the battery is reconnected so be prepared and leave the key in the door lock when you are about to reconnect the battery, once it is connected and the alarm goes off, turn the key to lock and unlock and the alarm will stop.
