In a dream, there is almost always a reference to something that happened in the first few years of your life. Maybe you literally saw yourself as a baby. The psychologist Sigmund Freud says that this is for two reasons. First, the dream is the fulfilment (coming true) of a wish. The wish wants to result in a movement, but it can't. Little children make continuous movements when they want something. They "dance" when they need to pee, and run around, and scream, and do similar things. The dream wants to do this too, but as it can't, it will settle for showing a time in life in which it could move like that. Second, when we were little children, we were much less determined to hide our sexual desires. Little children don't mind walking around naked in public, and if they want to see another child (of the opposite sex) naked, they will try their best to see them naked, ignoring the social shunning of this. Because the wish that comes true in a dream is often a sexual wish, it reminds us of a time in life in which sexual desires were not to be put down, as they are now, by social rules. Because of these two advantages of being a child, which the wish in the dream wants to have again, the dream will often refer to early childhood. Other psychologists may disagree with Freud on this.

If the dreamer is the parent of a young child, the dreams could be natural parental worry for the welfare of the baby. Such dreams are very common among new parents. Alternatively, the "baby" might symbolize an idea, project or task that is important to the dreamer.
