- Open the document library in question.
- Click actions > connect to outlook.
- Click OK for confirmation.
- This will add a folder with the name of the document library in your Outlook configuration.
- Open the folder, open any file using Outlook. This folder remains in 2-way sync with Sharepoint document library.

If the file has been checked out, still the changes made to it and can be viewed if they were checked-in. In other words, you can always checkin the changes and keep the file checked out to yourself. It would still allow others to view the changes but not edit them.
