Generally speaking, eating about 200 calories per day less than you have been eating will result in a weight loss of about 2 pounds per month, however many factors will affect your exact results. This assumes that your activity level does not change, and is only true for a few months, as the total amount you need to eat to lose weight will go down as your weight declines. In other words, you will need to eat a little bit less each month to continue to lose weight at the same rate.

The absolute amount a particular person needs to eat to lose weight depends on other factors in addition to activity, including sex, height, genetic makeup, innate metabolic rate, any chronic diseases, and so on. That is why I have stated the amount above relative to what you are eating now.

Try counting your calories for a month while eating normally and then cutting 200 calories off that. Cutting 400 calories per day should result in a weight loss of 4 pounds per month, but if you want to change your eating habits and keep the weight off indefinitely it is probably better to take it slow and easy to ingrain the new habits, since you will have to eat that way indefinitely. Trying to lose weight faster than this is asking for failure and a pattern of alternating gains and losses. Once you reach your target weight, you will still have to reduce intake as you age and your metabolism declines. Of course you should eat a balanced diet in the process of changing your habits. If you have a bad diet now, changing to a well balanced diet will probably put you on the right track to cut calories. Personally, I do not care for fad diets of any kind. It has been said that the best diet is the one in the Boy Scout Handbook, essentially the old "Food Pyramid". This has been updated in recent years and may be found on government websites.
