Most teachers aren't as stupid as the students think they are. They know what is in cliff notes and are aware of differences between a novel and what is in a movie adaptation. You can either argue points with the teacher until the teacher gives up (or throws you out) or you can read the book (or enough of the book to fool someone) and then discuss it with the teacher.
Most reading assignments in school are more interesting than you would expect and if you spend some time reading a book you might understand the plot and understand why it is being assigned to you. After all, the book is there because enough people read it before you to appreciate why others should also read it. Of course, this may not apply to Shakespeare or Chaucer where, in school, you just can't get through the book on your own without some help.
