If your Pontiac runs a 700r4 gm transmission you have stripped a reverse input shell. The transmission needs to come out for repair.

You blew your transmission, took out the reverse gear. You'll have to take it to a tranny shop and get it rebuilt (not cheap), or replace it yourself with one from a scrap yard. ($600 in parts, a weekend to do it)

First check your fluid level(refer to owners manual for exact procedure). If it is not low, then you have a bad transmission.

Fortunately, the engine light is flashing. That means that the computer has a code for you to read. Borrow, rent or buy a code scanner for your vehicle, plug it in and find out what the computer is telling you, then the mystery will be gone.
