check to make sure your radiator cooling fans are working. You can do this with the car idoling, even cold they should come on with the ac. Next check your freon level.
Check all rubber hoses near manifoil, than check manifoil gasket and carb body gasket, If all fails check flange or converter, than check idle jet and switch in carb.
If it hasn't been changed for a while, the timing belt might be a good place to start. (happened to me, in my '90) the car may be idoling to high so i am told That happened to me and the timing belt tensioner needed to be replaced, that may be something else to check.
