This happens because the internal battery inside the game cartridge died. The gold/silver/crystal games all have this problem. They had to have batteries inside them to keep track of the time while the game wasn't in use. Unfortunately, batteries die. And when the battery in the game dies, the save that was on it is deleted and it will no longer save any game. The good news is that your game isn't worthless. If you search with terms such as "pokemon gold battery replacement," you can find instructions on how to replace the battery. The usual tools needed are a new battery (the sites all say what type of battery you need, some type of watch battery), tweasers or pliers (or a specialty screwdriver to get that pesky screw offthe cartridge), and some electric tape. It's a delicate process, and it is possible to damage the game if a mistake is made.
u save it
the battery is dead in the game catrage so you need to get a newer made gold version. the same thing happend to me and i just found this out a few minuts ago. srry dude
What you do is that You click the start button, and press the up or down arrow until you get to save. You click save and it will say are you sure you want to save and you click yes, it will save. HOWEVER, if you are playing the original gold version then it runs on a save battery. The save battery may need to be replaced if saving does not work. -XS
the carterage battery ran out, unscrew hexagonal screw on back and replace the battery.

using the Pokemon cloning technique save before you get the first and second Pokemon but save after you get the third Pokemon. you have to vs your rival, take back the egg and have at least two Pokemon. you will be able to control all three Pokemon cus technically they were all owned originally by you. you must not save after you get the first and second Pokemon. that's it. Enjoy
Once the game gets old it looses the save function, that happened to my gold also.
it probably doesn't save because it is the fake version or a gba ROM.
Pokemon Gold and Silver are gameboy colour games. If you want to trade Pokemon between them you must have two gameboy colours and a gameboy colour link cable.

No. Since it is another generation of Pokemon, it is impossible to link the two games.
