The unexpected error could be a number of things, from attempting to import unsupported file types, to video filter issues or the need for program updates/patches/fixes.

My suggestion is to ensure you have your Automatic Updates enabled. Then, check in Update History to make sure all updates were successfully installed. If the program still closes automatically when you've just opened it, you might think about downloading and re-installing the your version of Windows Movie Maker again.
