What you can do is keep the dog out of the cold, no laying on cold hard surfaces, go to the vet for evaluation and no doubt the vet will give you some pain meds so the dog can get around more easily and get a little exercise.

"Bad Hips" is quite a general term and could be interpreted as a number of different conditions, but for the sake of this answer let us assume that you are talking about a degenerative disease such as Arthritis of the hips.

There are a variety of different prescription and non prescription drugs that could be prescribed and I shall name some examples below

  • Prescription Drugs - Rimadyl, Novox (1-800 Pet Meds are the cheapest for pet medications).
  • Non Prescription Drugs - Dog Aspirin, Baby Aspirin (Can be bought from Amazon.com for relatively cheap).
  • Dog Joint Supplements - Glucosaine, chondroitin, CM8, MSM, (make sure you buy a clinically proven supplement being used by vets.

If the problem persists if you have not done already you should take your dog to see a vet as hip dyplasia is a very common and more serious condition, which in some cases requires surgery.
