If your in-laws were still married at the time the debt was incurred, the answer is probably yes. If your mother-in-law is now on Social Security with no other income, they cannot collect , no matter what the creditors say, and most WILL lie and harrass . If your father-in-law was a military veteran with an honorable discharge , Mother may go to Vet Center for one-time free advice. If she has other monies, consult a lawyer.
Neither you spouse or any siblings are responsible if they were not over eighteen AND joint signators. Many debt collectors are so aggressive they will even suggest that other relatives have a "moral obligation " to pay theses debts . Tell them off.
