I don't know what denomination your friend was, but I am sure her family would appreciate flowers. There are very few religions that restrict the sending of flowers, and as far as I know, Protestants in general have no problem with receiving flowers in memory of the deceased. But if you are uncertain, you could also make a donation to a charity or cause your friend believed in, and send the acknowledgement card to the family, letting them know that a donation was made in her memory.
