When that happened to me i left my iPod alone until the battery ran out(several hours). After that i charged it again and it played fine.
You should try to hold the center and menu button, until an apple comes up, doing that will reset the ipod. (it doesnt erase the ipod songs or anything, it basically reboots it)
I did that when my Ipod classic didn't start, im not sure if it will work with other ipods...but try to anyway

If you have an iPod with click wheel i.e. iPod Classic, iPod Nano, 5G iPod and such all you have to do is start playing a song, then in the now playing screen press the center button until you see the lyrics. If you have the iPod touch however simply play a song and on the now playing screen touch the center screen and the lyrics show up.
