Dentistry is a field of medicine that deals not only with the teeth, but also the mouth and jaw. People who choose to work in dentistry study the oral cavity, working to prevent, diagnose and treat any disease and problems. There are many different career choices in the field of dentistry, requiring different qualifications and training.

Doctor of Dentistry

A Doctor of Dentistry is also known as a dentist. In order to obtain a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) in the USA, all dentists must undertake four years of undergraduate studies and then a further four years of dental school. This training allows them to competently perform a range of services including tooth extractions, periodontal (gum) treatments, dentures, fillings, crowns and bridges, and root canal treatment. Further post-graduate training is required for specialist services such as maxillofacial surgery.

Dental Assistant

There are more than 200 dental assisting schools in the USA offering studies to become a Dental Assistant (DA). Training varies from state to state, with some requiring dental assistants are licensed while others don't. Options to train as a dental assistant vary. Courses lasting 10 12 weeks can cost several thousand dollars, but many dentists are willing to give on-the-job training instead. DAs help the dentist by preparing patients for treatment, taking dental impressions, and holding suction during procedures amongst other things.

Certified Dental Assistant

To become a Certified Dental Assistant, DAs are required to complete an accredited dental course or work for at least two years as a DA, then take and pass the examination from the Dental Assistant National Board.

Dental Hygienist

A Dental or Oral Hygienist specializes in preventing dental disease, performing procedures that deep clean teeth and gums, as well as educating people on proper oral hygiene and care. In the US, the most common qualification is an associate degree, although both bachelor and master degrees can also be obtained. All degrees are obtained from school accredited by the American Dental Association, and all hygienists must be licensed in the state in which they want to practice.
