Among the jobs in Veteran Affairs are clinical personnel. Clinical personnel include nurses and nurses assistants who are responsible for providing direct care to hospitalized veterans. Other clinical personnel include physical and occupational therapists who work with disabled and injured veterans, to help them regain use of limbs or learn how to manage with prosthetic limbs. Medical doctors who work for Veterans Affairs determine treatment needed by patients, order medications, and perform surgeries. Veterans Affairs nurse practitioners and physician's assistants extend the work of Veteran Affairs physicians. These individuals can assess medical needs, and perform certain medical tasks under the direction of a physicians.

Another important Veterans Affairs job is that of mental health clinician. Mental health clinicians include psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors and masters level social workers. Each of these positions works to insure that veterans mental health needs are met. Psychiatrists evaluate mental status and prescribe medication if needed; and recommend other therapeutic interventions such as counseling and day treatment programs. Psychologists conduct assessments. counsel, and evaluate patients. Social workers and counselors provide provide individual and group therapy to help clients deal with issues such as post-traumatic stress syndrome and re-adjusting to civilian life. Social workers also provide case management services by linking veterans to needed services in the community. Other positions that provide therapeutic support include art therapists, music therapists, music therapists and similar professionals.

There are also numerous support positions in the the Veterans Affairs job arena. These positions include persons who assist with therapies, mobility and transporting patients to appointments. Medical records personnel and other clerical staff make sure that patient charts are kept up-to-date and that appointments are made and kept. Environmental services or housekeeping staff make sure the hospital environment is kept sanitary. Nutritionists and dietary staff plan healthy menus, prepare and serve food that helps veterans get the nutrients they need while recuperating.
