Alexandria, Virginia, located only six miles from downtown Washington D.C., is a small city of approximately 130,000 residents. The majority of Alexandria's citizens are working professionals who commute to the nation's capitol and surrounding areas.

Alexandria has a rich and exciting history that dates back to colonial times. George Washington's hometown was Alexandria. He selected Alexandria to be included in the District of Columbia, which occurred in 1791, but the government gave the city back to Virginia in 1846. In 1861, the first American Civil War casualty occurred in Alexandria. As such, Alexandria is known for its great Civil War reenactments.

Besides Civil War reenactments, Alexandria offers many other historical sites visitors may be interested in. Adults are encouraged to visit Gadsby's Tavern, where Thomas Jefferson usually entertained his guests. For religious visitors, Christ Church is a must see stop because Robert E. Lee worshipped in this church. Alexandria's Old Town area provides examples of colonial architecture in its 4,000 historical buildings.

Visitors to Alexandria are given many other non-historical activity choices when visiting, too. The world-famous Torpedo Factory Art Center is an art beacon, providing excellent opportunities for visitors who enjoy art and antiques. Alexandria is a hub for museum-quality antiques given its many antique shops and rich history.

Alexandria is located on the Potomac River and, as such, is a great stop for those interested in recreation and outdoors. Enjoy one of Alexandria's trails and parks with amazing views of the river and other sights. Many visitors combine their love for outdoors and history while touring Civil War sites on foot.

The city offers various free activities for those visitors who wish to stick to a strict budget as well. The Alexandria National Cemetery was one of the first fourteen national cemeteries established in the colonial region in the late 1800's. George Washington's Masonic Memorial honors the first president of the United States, providing fun facts and history related to George Washington's life. Finally, The Athenaeum is an art gallery in Alexandria where visitors can look at worldly art and crafts. Try one of the city walking tours offered for free at The Alexandria Visitors Center at Ramsay House to hit all of these sites and more at no charge.

Visiting Alexandria, VA is very fun and exciting for individuals and families alike. Due to its history and sites, visitors are never left disappointed after a day in Alexandria.
