Since alternative medicine does not fall in the realms of professional medical practices, sometimes it is looked down upon by the western culture. However, the west is becoming more aware of such practices and their effectiveness that some forms of alternative medicine and its practitioners are accepted.
In many countries alternative remedies are the only form of medicine. There are areas that have medicine men and women as their main medical source, but at the same time use modern treatments as well.

In China they have both Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Here in the US, we have Western Medicine that is run by the AMA, and the FDA. In addition we also have Complimentary and Alternative Medicine which includes massage therapy and bodywork.
