You play a werewolf in CW's "The Originals" and played a vampire in HBO's "True Blood". Have you always been into the whole supernatural drama/fantasy phenomenon?

I've always been drawn to dark, Gothic stories going back to when I first read "Picture of Dorian Gray" and Bram Stoker's Dracula. There is something about it that lends itself to the exploration of our darker nature that intrigues me.

Hayley and Jackson have always had a complex relationship. How would you describe the complexity of Jackson and Hayley's relationship at this point in season 2?

It's pretty much the same as last year, although now they're wading through all the awkwardness of what a betrothal actually means. Jackson knows Hayley wants to be with Elijah and he respects that. It doesn't make it easier for him though. When you care about someone and know your affection is not returned, it is really hard on you. Every moment you have with that person is filled with a kind of longing that you become afraid to show and Jackson is going through just that.

We can always count on there being a lot of blood when watching "The Originals" and "True Blood". What's it been like working with such large quantities of fake blood on set?

It's sticky. And cold. But great because it allows you to be kind of a mess!

Why should "Vampire Diaries" fans watch the spinoff "The Originals"? Is it every bit as awesome?

Yes. It's actually much darker I think. It also manages to not take itself too seriously, so as we're dealing with really heavy stuff and dark story, we always try to find a way to bring a little humor and humility to it.

What was the final episode of "True Blood" like for you? Was it hard to say goodbye?

It was. I hadn't been there as long as everybody else so for me, although it was sad, I had never really put down roots with that show. I knew it was a one year gig. But it was hard to see some of the cast walk away.

What was your favorite scene to film in season 7 of HBO's "True Blood"?

Probably the first scene I had with Nelsan. That was really the first time we got to explore James and develop that spark that played down the road.

You made the switch from a world of vampires and werewolves to the Civil War in Amazon's new series "Point of Honor" set to pilot in 2015. Why the switch?

I'm always looking for something new. I had never done a period piece and after being in the "genre" world so heavily, I had to get out of it and move into a new light. The last thing I want in the world is to corner myself as an actor and I think if you stick around in one world for too long that's all people can see.

What do you do in your down time from acting?

I go to the gym, go rock climbing, hang with my dog and read scripts. I haven't had much time this year so I can't really say!

Haha yes, that's definitely a requirement. I've never had a problem with blood.

What was the last movie you watched?

I rewatched "In Bruges" recently. I haven't been to a movie theater in a very long time.
