Antananarivo is not only the capitol, but also the largest city in Madagascar. Antananarivo is also known to many as Tana, the French colonial shorthand form of the word. This city is the economic, communications and administrative center of all of Madagascar. The word Antananarivo means the City of Thousand, named by King Andrianjaka in 1625, for how many soldiers were assigned to guard the guard it.

The city is covered by beautiful flowers and twisting stairways, giving it a very rustic appearance. It is guarded by two forts built on hills. Within the city of Antananarivo and it’s suburbs there are over 5,000 churches. Also located in Antananarivo are the Ivato Airport and the campus of the University of Madagascar.
