Are You a Good Candidate for Lasik?

For people dependent on corrective lenses, the possibility of having permanently corrected vision is very alluring. Who wouldn’t want to be able to quit using glasses if a relatively simple surgical procedure can allow almost perfect eyesight? With the costs for lasik dropping and more and more positive follow up research available, refractive surgery can be a great choice. However, not everyone can or should have the surgery. The following is a checklist of characteristics of good candidates.

  1. You are at least 18 years old. This is because vision is not finished changing until then. The cornea must have matured, or surgery is not advised.
  2. You do not have extreme nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Though lasik can improve vision even in these extreme cases, it cannot guarantee 20/20 or even 20/40 vision. For some people, any permanent improvement is worth the procedure, but only your eye doctor can make that determination.
  3. Your health is good. Any medical procedure can become complicated if the general health of a patient is compromised. If there’s any doubt about the quality of health, the patient will be referred to a medical doctor for further evaluation. In some cases, if overall health improves, the person can then undergo lazer surgery. People who have autoimmune diseases or Diabetes are not candidates for laser surgery.
  4. You have realistic expectations. Though in the best of cases lasik brings vision to 20/20, every person is different. It’s not possible to predict that all lasik patients will have perfect vision after healing is complete. The goal is to significantly improve vision, but there are no guarantees that any one individual will walk away with perfect vision.
  5. You understand that after 40, you may have to use reading glasses. Unfortunately, aging weakens the eye muscles involved in near vision. Though surgery to correct this vision problem is being explored, at this time there is none available. This means that despite successful lasik surgery for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, after 40 you may need glasses for close up vision.

Though only an opthalmologist can definitively say if you are a candidate for lasik, it’s a procedure worth considering.

Why can't some people have laser eye surgery?

There are many reasons someone may not be a good candidate for LASIK. I recommend patients not have LASIK surgery if their level of nearsightedness or farsightedness is too great (fortunately, there are alternative surgeries for many of these patients), if they have only one "good eye" and can't see well out of the other eye even with glasses or contacts, or have abnormal corneas. These are a few of the main problems I see, although there are many more.

Is PRK surgery a good option for people who aren’t candidates for LASIK?

Yes. PRK surgery Utah is often recommended for patients who may not qualify for LASIK due to thin corneas, irregular corneal shape, or certain lifestyle factors. PRK uses advanced laser technology to reshape the surface of the cornea without creating a flap, making it a safe and effective alternative. Many patients achieve the same long-term visual results as LASIK, with stable, clear vision once healing is complete. If you’ve been told you’re not a LASIK candidate, PRK may be the right solution for long-term vision improvement.
