Esl courses (more commonly known as English as a Second Language courses) are taught locally on college campuses, libraries in after school programs for youngsters and even exercises can be found online. For those taking ESL courses for the first time, here is a little bit on what you can expect to learn.

Basic English: In this course students can expect to learn the basics of English. From grammar structure, to the basic parts of speech it is all covered in this section. Students will learn basic sentence structure, sound alike words and meanings, diction, pronunciation and vocabulary. Students are also expected to learn basic words, numbers and the alphabet in basic esl courses. They learn colors, positive and negative language, how to tell time, days of the week and months of the year.

Intermediate English: This is where students will learn how to speak English. A lot of programs online force you to speak English right away without knowing what you are really saying. Taking standard courses that ease students into the language before learning how to speak the words are a great way to begin English. Intermediate courses learn verb tenses, parts of speech and how to use them and more difficult grammar structures.

Advanced/Conversational English: This is where students learn how to have basic conversations. Online lesson plans can be a fun way to aid to the learning process. Some lesson plans have students speak how they feel about themselves or describe what they did on any given day in English. Conversational English courses are a great way to learn how to speak English in your daily life. Most instructors ask students to keep a journal of responses, how their progressing or anything else they would like to keep in their journal.

Searching online can also provide a great way for ESL students to keep in touch with and learn from native English speakers. Languages are better learned spoken and heard, this is a great way to learn the language.
