An LPN is similar to a nurse, but they do not have to go to school as long. Most community colleges offer an LPN course that students can take. You do not normally have to have any other certifications before you receive this degree, but the more experience you have before taking the courses, the better you will do in the course. The course is split between book work and clinical work that is done at either a nursing facility or a hospital.

As soon as you know that you want to work in the nursing field, you should decide what career you want to pursue. Some colleges have waiting lists for their nursing programs because the programs are so popular and there are so many people that want to enroll in them. Depending on the college, you may have to take prerequisite courses before enrolling in the LPN program. Most schools don't require this, so you can apply for the program and begin your classes.

Not every school is the same when it comes to their LPN classes. Usually, the classes are not as in depth as RN courses because it is not a two-year degree. It is more of a certificate program than a degree program. Some of the classes that you will need to take include Biology and chemistry. You will also need to take math courses and general English classes. Most of the classes you will take are general education courses that every student takes while they are in school. After you have completed the basic courses, you would then go on to the nursing courses that are required for the school. Many of them focus on patient care that you will give to the people you work with. General care such as bathing patients and dressing them are discussed in the beginning of the course. You may also learn how to administer intravenous needles as well as how to change dressings on wounds. Medications will also be discussed and how to give them to patients. LPNs normally make about $30,000 to $40,000 a year.
