Audiovisual specialists set up equipment for classes, seminars, meetings and video conferences. They help with the creation and preparation of the presentations. They meet with teachers to select the appropriate course materials and type of training for each grade level. They maintain a library of audio tapes, videos, films and software. They also narrate presentations and create graphics. Audiovisual specialists are also involved in the setup of equipment and lighting, cleaning of equipment and coordination of properties, effects and other production necessities.

Audiovisual specialists should be knowledgeable in computer applications, hardware, software and processors. They should have a training background that includes training for individuals and groups, and how to meaure effectiveness of training. They need a strong background in media and communications, including graphic design, media techniques, writing and grammar. They also need knowledge of telecommunciations (broadcasting, transmission and operations), math and business managment, especially production methods. To be an audiovisual specialist, you also need to acquire skills in teaching, listening, troubleshooting, learning methods, operations analysis and equipment selection.

Audiovisual specialists spend a lot of time interacting with computers, making decisions, solving problems and thinking creatively. They gather information, schedule and coordinate activities, and communicate effectviely with co-workers, staff, customers and others from outside the organization.

About 80% of those who currently work as audiovisual specialists have at least a four-year college degree. Some postions even require graduate school. Extensive training and skills are required.

Salaries for audiovisual specialists range from $35,000 to $50,000 per year, with the average at roughly $41,000. This can vary slightly, depending on location and industry. Audiovisual specialists for churches make a little less, while those in the electronics manufacturing industry earn slightly more. Most people in this field have more than 10 years of experience. It is expected there there will be some growth in this field in the next five years, especially in the educational services field.
