When diagnosed with kidney cancer, the best treatment option depends on the overall health of the patient, the type of cancer found and how far it has advanced. Options include surgical and nonsurgical methods. While surgery is the most common treatment for cancer of the kidney, nonsurgical therapies can help relieve symptoms or make surgery easier to perform.

Importance of Staging

When physicians first diagnose cancer of the kidney, they need to know how far the cancer has advanced before attempting treatment. Cancerous cells can stay within the kidney, spread to nearby lymph nodes or move into the adrenal gland, liver, bones and lungs. Staging helps physicians determine tumor size, which organs are involved and the best treatment options. Determining the stage of the cancer requires imaging tests. These tests include a CT scan, an ultrasound and sometimes an MRI.

Kidney Cancer Surgery

Once physicians know the extent of the problem, they have several treatment methods available. Removing the kidney is the most common. Depending on the stage of the cancer, there are three operations a surgeon can perform. If the kidney tumor is small, a partial nephrectomy involves removing just the abnormal growth within the kidney. A larger tumor may require a simple nephrectomy. This procedure removes the entire damaged kidney. When the cancer spreads beyond the kidney, a radical nephrectomy is used. In this case, a surgeon removes the kidney, adrenal glands, surrounding tissue and sometimes portions of the lymph nodes.

Nonsurgical Methods of Treatment

Surgery is not always possible, so physicians might choose an arterial embolization or radiation treatment in an attempt to shrink the tumor. These types of procedures make surgical methods easier or help to relieve the symptoms of the cancer. Radiation kills the cancer cells, so this method is also beneficial after surgery. Often physicians use radiation to eliminate any cancer cells still around. Biological therapy attempts to use synthetic forms of interleukin-2 or interferon alpha naturally found within the body's immune system and produced when the body detects infections or diseases. Chemotherapy is a drug-based treatment for kidney cancer but is the least effective method for treating it.

More and more patients are surviving today from kidney cancer?

There were over 1.3 million new cancers diagnosed in the United States just last year and over 50,000 of these patients were diagnosed with kidney cancer. There is hope; more than 200,000 survivors of kidney cancer are still living today in the United States. Advances in surgical procedures, diagnosis and treatment options are allowing more patients to live with this disease and continue to live their normal lifestyles and schedules. With the Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of new medications to treat this advanced disease, today marks a new beginning for kidney cancer patients. These drugs work by targeting cancer cells in ways different than current drugs and will have a more positive impact for those who are suffering. Continuing research is improving the understanding of kidney disease and increasing the options that patients have to fight it. Often times, kidney cancer is referred to by its medical name, renal cell carcinoma. Renal is taken from the Latin word renalis meaning kidney. Cancer of the kidneys includes different forms, including papillary, clear cell, transitional cell, sarcomatoid and others. It usually causes symptoms or signs in its early stages. In later stages, symptoms often times include, back pain, weight loss, blood in the urine, fatigue and intermittent fever. There are some kidney cancer patients who are diagnosed before it has spread to other areas of the body, while there are others who have metastatic disease when the cancer is first diagnosed. Surgery is sometimes the first type of treatment, but often systemic treatment (treatment that is swallowed or injected) may be a recommendation before any surgery, though it is rare. If surgery is chosen as the first type of treatment, an additional type may be needed to delay the cancer from returning or to treat metastatic disease. As for proper treatment options for kidney cancer, it is be determined by the patient and his or her treatment team. The best approach may depend on many different factors, including the kind of cancer present, the general health of the patient, whether or not the cancer has spread and the preference of the patient.
