A degree in Biology can be a very fascinating major to pursue. There are many different jobs that require a degree in Biology, which keeps the field very interesting and competitive to work in.

The amount of schooling depends on what kind of career you plan on pursuing, and why you want that job. Some people may choose to stop their education with a Bachelor’s degree, while other may continue on to earn their Doctorate in Biology. Generally these people pick a certain niche of Biology that they want to study, such as ichthyology. If you stop at a Bachelor’s, you will only spend about four years getting your degree in Biology. However, if you choose to go on to get a Ph.D, than you may spend more than six years at a university.

The majority of the classes that you will take will be science related. There will be a lot of Physics and Chemistry sequences to complete, as well as the obvious Biology courses to master. Classes in Genetics and Physiology are also expected. The level of math you are required to complete will depend on what type of Biology major you plan on pursuing, although the majority of major’s will cap off somewhere around Calculus. There are of course exceptions to this that require much higher levels of math. If you plan to get a degree in Biology, don’t expect to be able to take a lot of easy electives. The majority of the work is very hard, but in the end it is well worth completing.

With a degree in Biology, there is a wide range of professions that you can go into. You can work as a lab tech that is in charge of producing new vaccines and other diagnostic agents. Or you can choose to go into the field of zoology to study entomology, the study of bugs, or herpetology, the study of reptiles. Having the ability to work out in the field studying the genetics of a particular animal species can be a very rewarding aspect of a degree in Biology. You can even choose to teach science, from the elementary level all the way up to the university- it all depends on how high of a degree you obtain.
