Financial records are one of the most important items to any business. Businesses need to know where money is being spent and where money is being made so that it can update its services and products accordingly. Bookkeepers are in charge of an organization’s financial records.

In a small organization, bookkeeping clerks usually have a huge responsibility to their workplace’s business. They will generally be in charge of documenting all financial transactions and keeping all other recordkeeping in order. In large organizations, the responsibilities of a bookkeeper might be focused on more specific areas of the business, which gets more into the area of accounting clerk job duties and is more highly specialized than a general bookkeeper.

There are many different types of bookkeepers. Just a few of these include:

•Payroll bookkeeper

•Assistant bookkeeper

•Head bookkeeper

•Full charge bookkeeper

Each bookkeeping roll carries its own set of duties and challenges. Keeping the books for a business is exactly what the bookkeeper does. They keep record of all financial transactions: Accounts paid, accounts receivable, receipts, and debit or credit card purchases are all kept track of by a bookkeeper of some kind. They’re the record keepers of the organization and their work is extremely important.

Bookkeepers generally start out making about $25,359, but the pay can go as high as $39,536 and even higher for larger organization bookkeepers.

Bookkeeping degrees can be obtained in vocational school courses, meaning that it’s possible to get a degree in bookkeeping in less time than four years. The education will include courses in payroll accounting, balance sheets, income statements, wholesale accounting, and many more fascinating aspects of the field.

The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers is the organization that gives out certification. Becoming certified isn’t a requirement, but it increases a bookkeeper’s market value, increases the chance of promotion, and makes you a more appealing potential employee to organizations that need a good bookkeeper. The certification shows that you’ve not only learned the skills of a bookkeeper but that you’re planning to continue to learn more as the field evolves. It shows potential employers that you are serious about becoming a top bookkeeper.
