Business Management trends are changing. Many companies are focusing more on hiring independent contractors. This new work arrangement eliminates many of the challenges of hiring employees. Independent contractors are more motivated to do a quality job. The ability of the company to switch contractors quickly motivates these workers to provide quality performance. Employees can be less motivated at times. The laws attached to the employer/employee relationship make separation more difficult.

The new trends in Business Management include managing work instead of people. Teleworking assignments and other flexible work arrangements illustrate this principle. Managers are discovering that the main goal is getting the work done promptly and accurately. The way the work is accomplished, or where the work is done is less important.

Also, the baby boomers are retiring in the next ten years. Many have already started their exodus; thus, leaders must learn how to effectively manage the generation x and y population. These workers are motivated differently than their parents and grand parents. Thus, those in Business Management must seek out ways to effectively motivate these people. Traditional ways alone will not work. The Human Resources department in every company will be critical to the success of managing the people. Business management will have to be more flexible and relevant to current conditions. The competitive nature of the current work environment will demand that companies develop creative ways to retain top talent.

The business department of colleges and universities offer business management degree programs. Students can often choose to specialize in a specific part of business management. Human resources, finance, accounting, operations, and operations are all areas that can be focused on. The management team in a company is composed of people from all departments. These leaders must come together and effectively develop strategy to move the company forward. Students interested in business management will learn many skills during their degree program. The program will give them a taste of all parts of managing a company. Graduates that have secured internships during the college experience will have a firm foundation to decide what area most interests them. Those that pursue internships often have contacts in the business management world. This can prove critical to their job search efforts.
