Many companies that sell glasses are so desperate to create sales that they will pay for your eye exam. You will get a free eye exam if you buy frames from them afterward. You should really not get an eye exam unless you are offered this type of a deal. This is not to say that you should put it off if you need it. You should just make sure that you look around until you find a free eye exam. Do not settle for anything else, because there are a lot of companies out there that are offering these deals.
Unfortunately no one offers free eye exams for contact lenses, only for eye glasses. The places that offer free eye exams for glasses often offer cheap contact lens exams. America's Best is one of those and they also have a deal where you can join a club for the same price as the contact lens exam and then you get free exams for the next couple of years.

If you are past due for an eye exam but your insurance does not contain optic and eye related coverage, there are other ways to get an appointment with a certified eye doctor or specialist in your area. Look around online for optical offices who offer free exams as a promotional way to get people into their offices. This does not mean that the office is scamming anyone, it simply means that they are eager for more clients. Use caution, however, because sometimes the fine print of such an offer will tell you that the exam is only free if you are purchasing glasses.

Battery free glasses for 3D are better if they are being used with passive 3D televisions. LG only have passive 3D television so the battery free glasses work with them. The other premium brands such as Samsung, Sony etc all use active 3D and their glasses are battery powered. The active glasses are far better for use with active televisions because the battery free glasses won't work with them. Previous criticisms of active glasses were weight and battery life. With the weight below one ounce and battery life of over 100 hours, neither of these are issues any more.
There are no private practices that offer the exam however there are companies that can offer you the service but it is a pretty basic eye exam
