How many times have you been driving down the street and had someone pull up next to you with music so loud it literally shook your car? Probably more than you can count. The music, however, wasn’t the culprit for the car- shaking volume, that would be the two large subwoofers located in the person’s trunk.
A subwoofer is a speaker that is made specifically to play the bass line in a piece of music or any kind of audio. These are also the reason your seats may rumble a little at the movie theater when you’re watching an action movie.
Many people install subwoofers in their car to give themselves that extra kick of bass, or maybe to announce their arrival through a certain piece of music. If you want to add a little bass to your commute, there are two ways you can go about doing it.
The most classic way is to add a speaker box and the two subwoofers to the trunk of your car that are wired into your sound system. Subwoofers range in volume depending on the size of the speaker, anywhere from about 6” to around 12” – 15”. The larger speakers are going to generate a deeper bass boom, but they’ll also require a bigger speaker box and take up more room in your trunk.
Also, the bigger the boom, the bigger the price, so keep that in mind when deciding to add subwoofers to your car. Also, you can go one of two ways. You can find subwoofers that are already enclosed, or you could by the subwoofers and the box separately. Either way, you’re going to end up spending between $150-$1,000, depending on the size of the boom and the brand.
The other option people pursue is obtaining what’s called a bass tube. This is essentially a subwoofer in tube form that doesn’t take up as much room as the classic subwoofers in a box. It also doesn’t generate as much sound, but some are willing to sacrifice that for a little trunk space. The bass tube is also good for those driving cars without trunks, as it can be fit behind or underneath seats. Bass tubes are only going to run you between $150-$300, depending on the brand.
No matter which way you go, you’ll definitely add a little bang to your commute.
