Cashiering is typically an entry-level position for those lacking experience in the job force and looking for advancement in the fields of retail and customer service. Cashiers tend to work hourly wages for major retailers, department stores, grocery stores, and convenience stores. Regardless of the location of the cashier’s position, cashiers typically perform similar duties that are easily transferable to other locations and allow for some upward mobility in the career field.

Cashiers work one on one to check out customers and perform monetary transactions at major retailers. Cashiers are expected to have basic data entry and computational skills, a friendly and approachable demeanor, and the ability to think logically and spatially in order to effectively bag goods for customers in their line.

Cashiers spend a lot of time on their feet with few opportunities to sit down, but it is important during all working hours to remain pleasant and professional for employees and for employers that are monitoring you at your register. Cashiers also must maintain a dress code that is appropriate for the store where they work. Typically, major retail stores and grocery stores will have a set color scheme for employees to wear to work. More high-end retailers and department stores may allow for more flexibility in dress code, which may or may not include wearing clothing from that particular store.

Typically, new cashiers are paid minimum wage give or take a quarter or two. At the beginning of a cashier’s career, the cashier has little ability to choose his or her schedule. Once the cashier gains more credibility from his or her employer, the cashier may be granted the authority to choose his or her schedule. Steadfast performance as a cashier can lead to regular raises in hourly pay. Continued outstanding performance as a cashier can lead to promotions as customer service representatives. These jobs are typically reserved for the best cashiers, who are well versed in store policies as customer service skills. If a cashier has been promoted to a customer service representative and decides to pursue an Associate’s or a Bachelor’s degree, there are further opportunities for upward mobility in management and human service fields.

Hard work as a cashier does pay off, and the experience gained from customer service can be easily lent to many careers in business and human resources.
