If you are like most women, you have a lot of items to carry with you in your handbag. You likely will be carrying a wallet, make-up bag, keys and cellphones as these are the most standard items one would find in a handbag. But what about large bulky items that you might want to carry such as an umbrella, a book, work files or a laptop? Do you stuff those in a handbag? What if they don't fit - then what do you do? The answer is easy, simply choose a good structured handbag for your necessities and carry a tote bag for larger items that you may not need to always have with you.

Choosing the Right Handbag

When you shop for a handbag, choose a structured bag that is durable and will hold up. Handbags are investments so don’t be afraid to spend a little bit more on a designer bag that you can carry for years. Look inside the bag to make sure it has ample pockets for small items such as cell phones. Some handbags have hooks that you can clasp your keys onto to eliminate the search at the bottom of the bag when trying to find the keys. Check the weight of the bag. If it is too heavy, it could hurt your neck and shoulders so find one that is the right weight for you.

Choosing the Right Tote

If your bag isn’t large enough to carry umbrellas and a laptop, look for a tote bag that will be roomy and sturdy. Choose one that will be durable enough to carry larger items. Choose a color that will compliment your wardrobe and not clash with your handbag, possibly a neutral such as tan and choose one that won't show dirt. Look inside to see if it has pockets as you may want to store smaller items in your tote as well especially on days when you want to carry just one tote as opposed to a tote and a handbag.

Balance yourself by carrying a good handbag for your necessities and carry a tote for those additional items that are too cumbersome to carry in your bag.
