Many people are familiar with charcoal briquettes that are sold in grocery stores for grilling. One popular alternative is known as hardwood lump charcoal. These are pieces of charcoal that have not been extensively processed. Lump charcoal will create more heat than briquettes. It also burns quicker than briquettes so more is required for longer cooking times. Many homes have turned to hardwood lump charcoal for barbecuing because it contains no fillers and no lighter fluid that could affect the taste of food.
The major negative of using a charcoal barbecue grill is the time it takes to get the charcoal burning and ready to cook. One will also need to wait several hours after the BBQ before the coals have cooled and to be able to clear it away.
I hope that I don't get a lump of charcoal for Christmas!

Place a folded newspaper inside of the starter, place right side up and fill with charcoal, light newspaper in multiple places, after burning, wait 10 minutes and your charcoal should have started heating up a lot. The charcoal is ready when you can see bits of orange on them.
A gas BBQ grill is easier to use, and is more convenient, but a charcoal grill will give you a smoky flavor, which cannot be achieved by using a gas BBQ. Gas BBQs are also safer than charcoal grills.
