This Halloween, you might want to try creating cute candy favors for your child's class at school. If so, you should think about making candy bugs. There is no need to worry as you do not need to have a lot of skill in order to make these simple Halloween party favors. To start, you will need wrapped candy like a peanut butter cup or a mint patty. You can use other types of candy too if you want. Purchase enough candy for each child to have at least one candy bug. To finish making the candy bugs, you will also need some craft supplies including a hot glue gun, craft eyes, small pom poms for the bug's nose, and pipe cleaners. You can make your candy bugs as colorful as you wish by purchasing multi-colored pop poms and pipe cleaners, or you may wish to just use black and orange. Using the hot glue gun, glue a pom pom on the piece of candy where you would imagine that a nose would go. Then, glue two eyes above the pom pom. After you have done this, you can glue pipe cleaners onto the candy to look like legs. You may want to create a four legged bug or even an eight legged bug. Depending upon the size of the candy bug body and the length of the pipe cleaners, you may need to cut the cleaners. This can easily be done using a scissors. Bend the pipe cleaners at the bottom to make feet. You can use more pipe cleaners to create antennae above the eyes of the candy bug. Curl the antennae if you want or let them straight. Creating the candy bugs should be relatively simple and quick to do. If possible, you may want to enlist your children's help to make the candy bugs. But be forewarned, you may need to watch them to make sure that the Halloween candy doesn't end up being eaten instead of transformed into Halloween candy bugs!
Micheals carries a great variety of Halloween themed candy and they also carry craft kits that include a fun activity of creating bugs made of candy. You can also buy molds and make you own bugs that way.

Halloween is one of the few holidays when people are welcome to show wacky creativity. When attending a Halloween party, it's best to bring an interesting dessert that everyone can enjoy. One of the easiest Halloween desserts to make is a dirt cake with candy bugs. To make this cake, gather a package of Oreo cookies, a chocolate cake mix, a package of vanilla pudding and several small packages of candy bugs. Gummy worms, spiders or novelty Halloween candies are perfect for this recipe. Make sure that enough eggs, milk and oil are available to make the cake. Follow the directions on the back of the cake box to prepare the contents in a square pan. Let the cake cool for about 45 minutes after it's done baking. While the cake is cooling, crush the Oreo cookies. To do this, empty the entire package into a plastic freezer bag and seal it. Use a rolling pin to crush the cookies. They may form clumps because of the frosting. Set the bag aside. Open the box of pudding mix, empty it into a large bowl and prepare it according to the directions on the back of the package. Chill the pudding in the refrigerator for about 25 minutes. Spread the pudding across the top of the cake. Put a light layer of candy bugs on top of the pudding. Don't use all of the bugs. It's best to use less than half of the total supply. If there is any pudding left, dab it on top of the first layer of candy bugs. Place the crushed cookies on top of the pudding and candy bugs. Be sure to break the clumps of cookies to ensure they are in crumbled form. Sprinkle candy bugs on top of them. Carefully push some of the candy bugs into the pudding layer. When the cake is finished, some of the bugs should appear that they're coming out of the cake. The rest of the bugs should be resting on top of the cake. This recipe serves about 10 people. For larger parties, plan to make multiple cakes or double the recipe to make a sheet cake.

By "candy coating", you mean, are they sometimes found in candy? Well in that case, the answer is YES! In such places as China and India, some people eat candy bugs (real life ones) such as bugs in lollipops etc.
