Denim Suits for Men: Back With a Flair?

Denim suits for men were once thought of as ancient relics from the last century. However, new fabrications and tailoring are bringing denim suits back in a big way.

Denim suits are geared toward the mature Baby Boomer or Gen-Xer. There is much psychology, and perhaps market research as well, that goes into the ad copy for these denim suits. They are skewed toward men who have made good in their chosen field, yet still yearn to be the carefree social outcast they once were.

The target customer is sometimes required to deal with corporate types as part of their work. There are many denim suits offered these days for exactly that man. He can deal with the uncool suits while giving a cool suit representation of himself.

There is one popular suit jacket called The Presentation. It looks fashionably rumpled, but is cut comfortably along jacket lines and is available in pre-washed, 100% denim. This thirteen pocket jacket, however, is advertised as being appropriate for travel and climbing mountains, yet fools the uncool suits into thinking the man wearing it is one of them.

The suits, naturally, come with denim slacks, but many guys in this demographic like to wear regular jeans with their jackets and save the slacks for important occasions.

The other area of society that is into denim suits in a big way is among Western men. The cowboy and gambler sensibility shows strong in their brand of denim suits. Western wear devotees like a nice denim three piece suit, with a yoke in the back and a vintage feel. The suit coats are cut longer, with arrow stitching at pocket corners and vents.

Many of the trousers are flared and some are made to be worn with suspenders. The long lean Marlboro Man look is well represented.

Then there is the jeans and jean jacket look called the Cowboy or Canadian Tuxedo, but the classic Tux look is also represented. The Tuxedo pairs denim with black velvet lapels and leg stripe, worn with a large 70’s bow tie and ruffled shirt.

Perhaps it’s a misnomer to say that denim is back. It never really left.
