Flappers had a very distinctive look that is easy to recreate. They were all about having fun and dancing the night away. They raised their skirts to show off some leg and kept up with the boys by out-smoking, out-drinking and out-dancing all night long. The costume does not cost much to put together and most supplies can be found at home and a thrift or craft store.

The base of a Flapper costume is the dress. Look for a tank style of dress that hangs to the knees. There should be no waist or a dropped waist. Red, silver or black are all good choices for a flapper dress - stay away from prints. Though simple in design the dresses were elaborate in style. Most had fringe or feathers on the hem so when they shimmied the dress spoke for itself. Fringe and feathers can be found at a craft store and attached to the hem of the dress. These girls wore chunky heels to show off their legs.

Accessorizing for a flapper costume is fun. Find a long string of fake pearls for a waist length necklace. Strings of pearls can be found at craft stores and cut to any length. The more pearls the better! These girls were usually found at a local speak-easy so keep an eye out for a flask to keep the "giggle water" in. They also smoked like a chimney and held their "ciggy" in a long black cigarette holder. A holder like this could be made easily by wrapping black electrical tape around a straw!

Flappers bobbed their hair. To bob long hair, secure the hair in a loose, low pony tail, tuck and pin the tail under to create a bob. Flappers wore dark eyeliner and mascara, peach eyeshadow and a light lipstick. By embellishing a simple tank dress with a few accessories a flapper costume is easy to create and fun to wear. Many of the items can be found at thrift and craft stores and at home so a lot of money does not have to be spent.

A Roaring Twenties Halloween?

A flapper costume is a unique idea for Halloween and relatively simple to put together inexpensively. The most important part of a flapper look is, of course, the hair. A woman or girl who has short hair can simply style it in a bob with a round brush and hair dryer. A pin-curl style can be achieved with gel and large, long clips to hold the hair in place until it dries. Women and girls with longer hair will need a wig to achieve a proper flapper look. A short dress with spaghetti straps and a dropped waist is ideal for a flapper costume, but the most important things are the straps and a skirt that ends above the knees. A summer sundress could be utilized for the costume. Thrift stores and consignment stores carry inexpensive vintage dresses. There are four accessories that must accompany the dress in order to complete the costume. A flapper needs a long string of beads that can be tied. This item would be easy to find in a thrift store. A flapper also must have a headband to tie so that it fits low across the forehead. Thrift stores and department stores carry scarves that could be utilized as headbands, and beads for embellishments can be purchased cheaply in craft stores. A flapper should have strappy shoes with a little heel, but flat Mary Janes could be worn as well. Finally, a flapper must have her stockings rolled down below her knees. The stockings may be a bit trickier to find. Department stores might carry suitable stockings but a visit to a costume shop may be in order to get just the right style. Flappers need dark lipstick and white face powder for an authentic 1920s look. While not absolutely necessary, a wristlet purse would be a charming and suitable accessory for a flapper. To ward off the October chill, a fringed shawl from a thrift store would be acceptable for the flapper costume. For a woman looking for an unusual and sexy Halloween costume, the flapper is an ideal theme.

That's No Lady, That's a Flapper?

Historical costumes have long been popular at Halloween parties. This costume is not a 1700's president, a popular scientist, or a famous dictator. It relates back to a time, after WWI, when women were taking charge of their lives. They became rebellious and wanted to get noticed. They were referred to as "flappers." Flappers did things that stereotypical women of the 1920's just did not do. They danced, drank alcohol, smoked cigarettes, and drove automobiles. They were quite naughty by the standards of that day. To obtain the correct image, one must understand that although the flapper girl costume must be just right, behavior will play a big part in this costume. Wearing a lot of makeup and being flirty are good ideas. Also, a wig styled in the bobbed style is good. If you are unable to find a wig, a close fitting hat will do. Stick a feather in it, if you have one. Although adult women can make the flapper persona provocative, the little girl version should lean toward "cutesy." The bob haircut is necessary for the look, so finding a wig for the child will help in acquiring the 1920's look. Also, a child's flapper costume could contain lots of long beads to swing around or a feather boa. Leaving out the cigarette and alcohol would probably be a good idea. The dress of a flapper costume should be a soft material, non-fitted, shift style. The length should be just below the knee. The 1920's flapper wore shoes with a slight heel. Accessories of different kinds can be added to the costume as accents. Try a long strand of beads, hanging to the waist. Gloves will add to the look, as well as rhinestone bracelets and earrings. To be the talk of the party, it would be humorous for a man or boy to wear a flapper costume. To be recognized as a flapper, the bobbed wig, beads, and dress are a must. Otherwise, he is just a man in drag. Have fun traveling back in time when women were breaking free. Enjoy all the attention you will certainly get as a 1920's flapper.
