Designing an Authentic Pirate Costume

Pirate costumes have always been popular for Halloween and other masquerade occasions, and with the recent release of some pirate-themed blockbuster films, finding the right details for a pirate costume that will stand out will take some additional planning.

Rather than buy complete, stock pirates costume at a large retailer, begin by doing a little research on authentic pirate and sailor garb throughout history. Look at old paintings and illustrations of pirates and read a few articles about famous buccaneers to get some unique ideas and perspectives. Take notes on aspects or details you would like to add to your own pirate outfit.

Next, begin checking at thrift stores and dollar stores for your accessories. Gaudy costume jewelry, wide brimmed hats, loose blouses, trousers that can be cut or modified, and boots can usually be found with a bit of shopping around at second hand stores or discount stores.

With a bit of do-it-yourself, you can turn these inexpensive accessories into reasonably authentic looking pirate garb. For instance, finding a wide brimmed, well used hat can easily work as a triangular captain's hat by turning two sides of the brim up and inward, and stapling or pinning them in place. Old black, blue or brown trousers can be cut at the bottoms, leaving ragged edges to create a worn look. By adding some dirt stains, you can increase the appearance of clothing being worn out.

An old silk or linen scarf can be tied around the neck, head or (if large enough) the waist, and layering a few of these can really add a wonderfully gaudy, over-the-top appearance that many pirate captains were famous for. With some water soluble black makeup or Halloween paint, you can also add a bit of stubble or beard to your face for an unshaven, rakish look.

To complete your pirate costume, a toy sword or toy flintlock pistol can be purchased from a dollar store or inexpensive retailer. Adding a few dirt stains to these, too, can give a more authentic look to the whole appearance. Of course, remember to scowl and leer a lot when wearing your costume too!
