The symptoms of Diabetes are not alarming like a sudden stabbing pain. Instead they are more subtle and common place. Reaching for a glass of water because you are thirsty is not usually a reason for alarm, but if there is a history of diabetes in your family it can be reason for concern.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes usually strikes young children. Type 1 diabetics lose pancreas function. Without a functioning pancreas secreting insulin, blood can rise quickly and stays elevate without treatment. The symptoms to look for in a child with type 1 diabetes are frequent trips to the bathroom (urination), excessive thirst where the child is constantly asking for something to drink, extreme hunger and a suddenly increase of appetite. Unusual or unexplained weight loss, especially in the presence of extreme hunger, is a warning sign that warrants calling the doctor. Another symptom of type 1 diabetes is extreme fatigue and excessive irritability. Any of these symptoms will be out of the normal realm of behavior for the child and relatively easy to spot. Call the doctor and get the child a blood test and treatment immediately.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes commonly strikes adults. The Type 2 diabetic still has a pancreas that produces insulin, but the insulin is not enough and the body becomes insulin resistant resulting in inadequate results from insulin. Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include all the Type 1 symptoms plus blurred vision, frequent infections, recurring bladder, skin, or gum infection, slowness to heal from a cut or scratch, and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet.

Diabetes can be well managed with medication, especially Type 2 diabetes, and diabetics can live a long normal life with proper treatment. The important thing is to get help as soon as diabetes is suspected. Modern home kits for testing blood sugar are easy to use and essential in creating a healthy balance between diet, exercise, and medication. A small amount of education regarding proper diet and nutrition, medication, and exercise can go a long way in creating a healthy balance in the body and maintaining the health of a diabetic.

The American Diabetes Association explains that type 1 diabetes is recognized as the inability to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that converts starches and sugars into energy for your body. This type of diabetes is most often diagnosed in young adults and children giving it its moniker "juvenile diabetes." Some common symptoms associated with type 1 are: unusual thirst, abnormal weight loss, extreme hunger, intense fatigue, irritability, and frequent urination. Early detection can greatly reduce later complications. However, because many of these symptoms seem harmless, often a diagnosis goes undetected.
