Inexpensive vertical blind repair

Vertical blinds are simple to repair if only a vane is involved, but check the warranty first. Usually, a do-it-yourself repair voids the warranty. In that case, it is better to call the manufacturer and ask what procedure to follow.

Blinds come in several different types but all consist of vanes that are vertically hung from a head rail. The most common damage is that a small piece will snap off if the vane is tugged at or entangled. Then the vane comes off the head rail.

Bob Schmidt from Home Remodel Workshop created a video about how make this simple repair at http://www.5min.com/Video/Inexpensive-Vertical-Blind-Repair-120809133

To clean vertical blinds, check the manufacturer's care manual. This will also give the necessary information if a replacement vane must be purchased.

If a vane is broken off farther down, it will need to be removed and replaced. Once the new vane is obtained, follow these directions:

  • Remove a vinyl or aluminum vane hung on a holder or carrier by bending it out to open the holder and then down to remove. Install the new vane by holding it near the top and gently pushing it into the holder, then down to lock in place.
  • Vanes with a spacer chain require that the screw or tie-down clip that holds the chain be removed. Then remove each vane until the damaged one is reached. Use a small piece of cardboard cut to the size for proper spacing when putting vanes back on the chain.
  • Fabric vanes are hung with a spacer chain. To remove vanes, disconnect the connector from one side of the vane weight, then pull the weight out of its pocket. This is located at the bottom of the vane. To re-hang the vane, put the weight back into its pocket and attach the spacer-chain connector to it.

Head-rail damage must be performed by a professional. Remove the head-rail by first taking off all the vanes. Then disconnect it from the brackets, asking someone to hold the other end.

Or, the wear and tear of every day life just taken its toll, and you want your blinds to seem new again? Either way, read on for some helpful repair and care tips!If any vanes have torn along the top and can no longer be hung, do not try to use duct tape, string, paper clips, or other such nuisances. Many people are not aware of a simple product known as a "vane saver" which can quickly and easily be slid onto the top of any vertical blind, replacing a hole which has been torn through. These can be picked up at any hardware or home good store.Another common issue is vanes that come out of alignment. This can be easily solved with a thin, flat object such as a credit card. Just be very careful not to let the vane tear or get caught on the hook.It is also important to keep in mind that vertical blinds need to be cleaned periodically.
