Sound engineering is one of the most essential fields in entertainment and business. Without the expertise of a dedicated audio engineer, much of the intensity of entertainment and the advancements in business would not exist.

Being a sound engineer means learning the basics of audio and keeping up with the ever changing advancements in audio technology. For instance, sound went "3D" way before video with the advent of surround sound, and successful sound engineers immediately added this to their repertoire, pushing the limits of how the public heard itself in everyday life.

The art of the sound engineer is making sure that each and every sound in any soundscape has its own position within the audio spectrum, giving the listener the ability to clearly hear everything, even if the soundscape is complex and nuanced. The basic tools that the sound engineer will use to do this are volume, panning, and frequency modulation. Most of the weird effects you hear in movies and music come from these three ways of manipulating sound.

The average person plays sound engineer everyday in the commute to and from work. The equalization settings which affect how much bass and treble you hear is a much simpler version of the equalization effects that a professional audio engineer will use in a mixing studio or at a live venue. If you have ever used the controls to push the music to the back speakers only, you have used panning.
